SceneThat is a campaigning organisation set up to help protect and promote photographers’ rights.
Over a number of years, a combination of legislation and public paranoia has resulted in an increasingly difficult time for photographers. People going about nothing more than their totally legitimate work or recreation began to be labelled "Terrorists" or "Perverts". Although only a small number of people were directly affected, (much less than 1% of the total number of 'active' photographers) this attitude continued to develop into an anticipation of confrontation or accusation.
Sadly, a lot of the comment and speculation was (is) poorly informed, ranging from apocryphal [It is well known that...] to just plain wrong [They have no right to ...].
By maintaining this website, SceneThat aims to simply the quest for reliable information. We do not seek to provide alternate interpretations of existing statute or regulation; instead we provide pointers to publically available documentation and encourage photographers to make their own educated judgements.
SceneThat has no ‘political’ agenda; we simply strive to see the formulation and application of fair, even-handed legislation without further erosion of the hard-won rights and responsibilities of a free society.
We challenge those people who seem to believe that a peaked cap excuses you from thinking - even those councillors and politicians who can't or don't wear peaked caps, but for whom the "jobsworth" label was created.
We encourage photographers to see behind the occasional idiocy that we highlight.
Although we are sure that the intent of the people we challenge is often well-meaning, SceneThat is ‘the someone’ that will throw down the challenge when no natural opponent emerges.
